Music Monday: Steve Martin

I’ve had a thing for Steve Martin since I was young; he’s one of the reasons I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the banjo.  While better known for his comedic skills, his mastery of the banjo runs deep.  In 2001, he played with Earl Scruggs on the song “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” which won him a Grammy for Best country Instrumental Performance.

In his recent bluegrass album, “The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo” – 14 out of the 15 songs are Steve Martin originals, arranged with by John McEuen.  With guest performers Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Mary Black, & Tim O’Brien – as well as Earl Scruggs all making appearances – this is my new favorite album, for lounging & hooping.  There are many shifts in medley, beat, & emotion & the end product just makes me love the banjo even more.
